What Are You Reading?

This is a fun little thing that we do on some of the industry forums I visit...we always enjoy hearing about what everyone is digging into, and in light of how often we talk about that books sell via word of mouth, well, let's start some word of mouth!

So right now, I'm tearing through Gwendolen Gross's The Other Mother - lush prose, wonderful plotting...I'm really enjoying it. In fact, I even pre-ordered this book because I was so excited to read it, but am just getting to it now because I try to avoid reading anything that I worry might be similar to my own WIP - I don't want to be unconsciously influenced. Now that I've wrapped my WIP, I'm free to enjoy it.

So what are you guys reading and loving right now?

You've written for both FAMILY CIRCLE and WOMAN's DAY. What are some of the differences you see in these two similar magazines? Did these differences affect the way you wrote your queries?

I'm reading The Grasshopper King by Jordan Ellenberg, a brilliant young mathematician who also blogs about books, family, children, food, baseball, movies, and lots of other interesting stuff. Plus he contributes provocative pieces to Slate's "Do the math: A mathematician's guide to the news," such as his recent one titled "The New York Times Slips Up on Sexual Math." And, no he's not a friend or relative. I've never met him, but I do read his blog regularly.

I just finished ANIMAL, VEGETABLE, MIRACLE by Barbara Kingsolver. I thought I'd hate it (as a lover of cheez-its & baloney sandwiches, there aren't many food books that don't treat my choices with contempt) but I was totally surprised. This is a fun, interesting, non-judgemental book about the way her perspective on food changed as she started to think about eating things produced nearby, rather than shipped across the country or the world. I'd totally recommend it.

Next up is John Elder Robison's LOOK ME IN THE EYE.

City of Bones by Cassandra Clare. It's a big fat YA Urban Fantasy set in New York City. I'll probably have to set it aside until after I finish the WIP though since I've got a 12/1 deadline LOOMING and not much to show for it so far.

Um guess i better get off hte 'net while I'm at it.

I'm reading the ARC of Monsters of Templeton by debut author, Lauren Groff. Then, for a change of pace, I'll be off to Italy via John Grisham's Playing for Pizza.

I also loved Kingsolver's Animal, Vegetable, Mineral. I read it along with Plenty, the story of the 100 Mile Diet, as I'm very much interested in keeping our food local these days.

I also recently read Maxine Swann's Flower Children, which had lush prose, but disappointed me overall with it's lack of story.

I'm just about to open Carolyn Parkhurst's Lost and Found.

I just finished James McBride's "The Color of Water" and was captivated. Next for me is "No Logo" by Naomi Klein and for fiction, "Bobbie Faye's Very (very, very, very) Bad Day" by Toni McGee Causey.

Nicky - Lost and Found has been my favorite book I've read all year. Enjoy!

Currently I'm almost done with an ARC of Riding with Larry Resnick by Jess Riley (out summer of '08 from Random House) and am in complete pink-puffy-hearted love with her writing. If you can find an early copy, grab it!
